Colourful street furniture in public spaces
Street furniture can be seen everywhere. Rubbish bins and outdoor benches have become an integral part of public spaces. Yet the presence of street furniture only really stands out when you start to look for it specifically. Street furniture often comes in a neutral, unobtrusive colour, allowing it to blend into its surroundings. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with that, but sometimes street furniture could certainly stand out a bit more. Not only because it adds colour to public spaces, but also because it can serve a useful purpose.
A colour of your choice
Grijsen makes extensive use of steel in the manufacture of street furniture. It is used, for example, in the frame of an outdoor bench or in a litter bin. The material is strong and can last for years outdoors. This is partly due to the treatment it undergoes. The steel is first hot-dip galvanised, after which it is given two layers of powder coating. The choice of colour is up to the customer. It is possible to powder-coat the steel in any RAL or Akzo colour. The steel can be powder-coated in a fairly neutral colour, such as black, grey or dark blue, but the customer can also opt for a very striking colour, such as red, green or yellow.
Promoting the use of colour
Local authorities can use striking colours to make litter bins stand out. Research by Dijksterhuis and van Baaren, commissioned by the City of Rotterdam, shows that bright green litter bins collect more litter than grey ones. People made less use of the less conspicuous coloured bins, particularly in bad weather. Thanks to their striking colour, the bright green bins stood out clearly, even in inclement weather. Their use increased as a result of the bright colour. This finding may provide a good reason to opt for bins in a striking colour.
Something different from the usual
Opting for a striking colour of powder coating can also result in a unique feature. Over the years, Grijsen has supplied waste bins in all sorts of colours. Think, for example, of bright green, yellow, red or even pink waste bins, sometimes combined with other street furniture in the same colour. By using eye-catching colours, you can create a playful atmosphere in outdoor spaces. This could be particularly useful at schools or in the leisure sector.
As mentioned, Grijsen has supplied many litter bins in distinctive colours over recent years. Below are a number of projects in which we have been able to apply special colours for our clients.
Green, refurbished litter bins
Haaksbergen Council and the project group The GAP chose attractive, green litter bins for the newly laid-out park in Haaksbergen. The litter bins had previously been in public spaces for many years, but were replaced by larger ones after a number of years. They were subsequently refurbished and given a new powder coating.
Bright yellow furniture at the Dijkcentrum shopping centre in Roosendaal
During the renovation of the Dijkcentrum shopping centre in Roosendaal, a stone-paved square was a thorn in the side of many shopkeepers. It has now been replaced by an S-shaped outdoor bench. The frame is powder-coated in a bright yellow colour. It makes for a lovely, eye-catching entrance to the refurbished shopping centre. The litter bins have also been given a ‘yellow’ finish.
Pink rubbish bins in Aalsmeer
Aalsmeer wanted to give a further boost to the recognisability and appearance of litter bins, particularly in shopping centres. The council opted for a litter bin that stands out more thanks to its different colour and design. The litter reduction grant made it possible to purchase new bins for the town centre.
